AWCN16 CWHX 311714 SPECIAL WEATHER SUMMARY MESSAGE FOR NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR ISSUED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA AT 2:44 PM NDT MONDAY 31 OCTOBER 2011. A MAJOR FALL STORM WHICH BATTERED THE EAST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE MARITIME PROVINCES EARLIER ON THE WEEKEND MOVED INTO NEWFOUNDLAND OVER THE COURSE OF THE DAY ON SUNDAY. PRECIPITATION ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM BEGAN OVER SOUTHWESTERN NEWFOUNDLAND IN THE MORNING AND SPREAD TO NORTHEASTERN REGIONS BY AFTERNOON. AREAS OF CENTRAL AND WESTERN NEWFOUNDLAND SAW THE PRECIPITATION FALL PRIMARILY AS SNOW, WHILE THE SOUTH COAST AND MOST OF THE EAST COAST EXPERIENCED RAIN. CONDITIONS GRADUALLY BEGAN TO IMPROVE DURING THE DAY ON MONDAY AS THE LOW MOVED OUT TO SEA. MANY SITES ALSO EXPERIENCED HIGH WINDS, WHICH RESULTED IN BLUSTERY CONDITIONS WHERE THE PRECIPITATION WAS FALLING AS SNOW.
