Extratropical Storm Danny #8

Emergency Measures Organization
Severe weather advisory issued (09/08/28)
NB 1238

Aug. 28, 2009

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The following severe weather advisory is issued by the Department of Public Safety's Emergency Measures Organization on Friday, Aug. 28.

The track for Tropical Storm Danny is expected to move across Nova Scotia on Sunday, Aug. 30. Current weather forecasts for New Brunswick call for rain, at times heavy, and strong gusty winds, especially in the southern half of the province, with the Bay of Fundy shore and southeast New Brunswick most likely to see the strongest weather. The rainfall is expected to start late Saturday in the south, and spread northward across the remainder of the province on Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Guidance at this time suggests that the Bay of Fundy and southeastern areas could receive 45 to 60 mm (one to two inches) of rain over a 14-to-16-hour period, while the remainder of the province could receive 15 to 20 mm (less than one inch).

Rainfalls in these amounts do not normally result in severe outcomes; however, due to the nature of tropical storms, rainfall amounts could be higher in some locales, and at times be quite heavy. Therefore, the potential exists for the rapid increase in water levels in drainage ditches, streams and rivers, which can result in localized flooding.

People living or working along watercourses or coastal areas should take steps to protect their property and remain on alert until the storm has passed.

This advisory will be of particular concern to those who have been affected by similar storms in the past.
