Waterspout, hail surprise Nova Scotia on chilly weekend
CBC Meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says Saturday's dynamic weather was caused by a quick moving low
A waterspout off the southwest coastline of Nova Scotia Saturday afternoon surprised Aldric D'Eon, who sent CBC a photo.
While not the usual time of the year to see waterspouts, conditions were such that one could have been produced. Most waterspouts are typically weaker than tornadoes, but some can be strong enough to lift water up into their vortex.
We saw some dynamic weather around Nova Scotia Saturday afternoon and evening with cold, dry air aloft and a quick moving low coming in from the south.
Hail near Cape Sable Island
The cold air aloft, low pressure system and sea surface temperatures of nearly 14 C allowed for the development of unseasonably strong up-drafts producing some thunderstorms near and just off the coast.Hail fell around the Cape Sable Island area of Nova Scotia. Thanks to Dick Crowell for sending in photos.
