GRAY, Maine — Strong thunderstorms rumbled through the state Monday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service office in Gray.

A line of thunderstorms moving across northern New Hampshire left some trees and power lines down and about 2,000 people without electricity after a tornado warning, according to a report from Portland television station WGME, CBS 13.

According to a tweet from Charlie Lopresti, a meteorologist with CBS 13, a tornado touched down Monday evening in Aroostook County.

Tornado warnings in the region are rare, and two of them were issued Monday afternoon, according to CBS 13. One was for New Hampshire into Maine, and another was for Kingfield, Maine, south of Carrabassett Valley.

The weather service reported that frequent lightning was possible with the storms, along with dime-sized hail and winds gusting up to 70 mph.
