Rainfall warning in effect for:

Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County
Rain, at times heavy, is expected.

50 to 70 mm of rain expected today and into Thursday except up to 30 for Northern Inverness County.

A major low pressure system will track towards the region today and stall southeast of Cape Breton tonight. Rain associated with this system will persist into Thursday. Rainfall amounts of 50 to 70 mm can be expected today and into Thursday across Cape Breton except over Northern Inverness County where only up to 30 mm are forecast before the rain tapers to showers Thursday night.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Wind warning in effect for:

Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County
Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.

Strong northeasterly winds gusting to 100 km/h are forecast to develop tonight. These winds are likely to persist through the day on Thursday before gradually diminishing Thursday night.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.

Storm surge warning in effect for:

Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County
Strong northeasterly winds will redevelop tonight and persist into Thursday bringing higher than normal water levels with large waves near the coast during high tide tonight.

Coastal flooding is possible along the shoreline. High waves combined with the surge may cause damage along the coast.

Storm surge warnings are issued when water levels pose a threat to coastal regions.

Snowfall warning in effect for:

Colchester County North
Snowfall with total amounts of about 20 cm is expected.

A major low pressure system will track towards the region today then stall southeast of Cape Breton tonight. Rain associated with the low will begin this afternoon then is expected to changeover to snow tonight. Snow will then mix with rain on Thursday. The low will also bring winds gusting up to 80 km/h over the region on Thursday with higher gusts possible. Conditions should begin to improve Thursday night into Friday.

Near 20 centimetres of snow is forecast with this storm with lesser amounts likely along north facing coasts.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Winter storm warning in effect for:

Queens County P.E.I.
Heavy snowfall and high winds are expected.

A major low pressure system will track towards the Maritimes then stall southeast of Cape Breton. Precipitation will begin as rain this evening but is expected to change over to snow later tonight. The low will also generate significant winds gusting up to 100 km/h tonight which will persist into Thursday. Heavy snow is expected to taper to light snow mixed with rain Thursday morning.

Snowfall totals of 15 to 25 cm are currently expected with lesser amounts over eastern sections of the island where snow will mix with rain for the duration of the storm.

Additionally, large waves and pounding surf could give elevated water levels along northeast facing coastal areas tonight and Thursday.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

Snowfall warning in effect for:

Moncton and Southeast New Brunswick
Snowfall with total amounts of 20 to 30 cm is expected.

A low pressure system will intensify rapidly as it approaches Nova Scotia from the south today and tonight. Showers and drizzle will persist today over southeastern New Brunswick.

Rain associated with this low is forecast to develop early this evening then quickly change to snow at times heavy later this evening. This heavy snow is forecast to persist on Thursday.

Total snowfall amounts tonight and Thursday are forecast to be 20 to 30 centimetres. The snow will be accompanied by very strong northerly winds with gusts on Thursday up to 80 km/h.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Special weather statement in effect for:

Acadian Peninsula
Large waves and heavy pounding surf as well as elevated water levels are expected along the coast near high tide tonight and Thursday.

Another low pressure system will approach eastern Nova Scotia later today and intensify rapidly as it stalls east of Cape Breton Island Thursday morning. Snow and strong northerly winds will develop over all of eastern New Brunswick tonight. A snowfall warning is in effect for all of eastern New Brunswick.

Very strong northerly winds gusting up to 80 km/h will give large waves and heavy pounding surf along the coast of the Gulf of St. Lawrence tonight and Thursday. In addition, higher than normal water levels can be expected near high tide.
