Mid-December Winter Storm Update Five
10:51 AM AST Tuesday 18 December 2018
Winter storm warning in effect for:
Victoria County
Hazardous winter conditions are expected.
Snow to continue today and tonight.
A slow moving low pressure system north of Cape Breton Island will drift eastward today. Snow will persist
in the northwest while rain or drizzle over Cape Breton is now transitioning to snow. Additional snowfall
amounts of 10 to 20 cm are expected. Increasing northwest winds will give reduced visibilities in blowing
snow today and tonight.
Higher than normal water levels are expected along the Northumberland Strait and the west coast of Cape
Breton today and tonight.
Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to
near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an
emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a
flashlight.
Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur
together.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather,
send an email to NSstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #NSStorm.
