...NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE WINTER SEASONAL SUMMARY...
THE METEOROLOGICAL CORE OF WINTER COMPRISING DECEMBER 1ST THROUGH
FEB 28TH/29TH WAS COLDER AND SNOWIER THAN AVERAGE FOR MOST OF THE
REGION WITH ABOVE AVERAGE TOTAL PRECIPITATION.
TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM 1 DEGREE ABOVE AVERAGE ALONG THE IMMEDIATE
DOWNEAST COAST TO 1 TO 2 DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE FOR CENTRAL AND
NORTHERN AREAS WITH INTERIOR DOWNEAST AREAS RIGHT AT AVERAGE.
PERIODS OF COLD DURING THE SEASON WERE PUNCTUATED BY THAWS
ASSOCIATED WITH RAIN EVENTS MOST FREQUENTLY FOR DOWNEAST AREAS, BUT
AT TIMES, EVEN FOR NORTHERN AREAS.
PRECIPITATION WAS ABOVE AVERAGE RANGING FROM 120 PERCENT DOWNEAST TO
150 PERCENT OF NORMAL ACROSS THE NORTH FOR THE PERIOD. AT CARIBOU,
THE METEOROLOGICAL WINTER PERIOD TOTAL FOR 2018/19 OF 12.33 INCHES
WAS THE 3RD GREATEST, JUST BEHIND THE RECORD TOTAL OF 12.62 INCHES
OF 2007/08. THE COMBO OF THE TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION REGIMES
RESULTED IN SNOWFALL FOR THE PERIOD RANGING FROM BELOW AVERAGE OVER
DOWNEAST TO WELL ABOVE AVERAGE ACROSS THE FAR NORTH. THE 114.2 INCH
DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY (ONLY A PORTION OF THE TOTAL SEASON) TOTAL
OBSERVED THIS SEASON ALSO RANKED 3RD, BEHIND THE ALL TIME RECORD OF
128.7 INCHES RECORDED IN 2007/08, BUT STILL WELL ABOVE THE AVERAGE
SNOWFALL OF 71.5 INCHES. IN COMPARISON, BANGOR ONLY RECEIVED 47.1
INCHES THIS SEASON, BELOW THE NORM OF 54.4 INCHES.
SUBSEQUENTLY, AVERAGE SNOW PACK FOR THE SEASON VARIED STEEPLY FROM
SOUTH TO NORTH ACROSS THE AREA, RANGING FROM ONLY 2.8 INCHES AT
BANGOR TO 23.2 INCHES AT CARIBOU (TIED FOR 6TH HIGHEST BEHIND 31.8
INCHES DURING 1976/77). MAXIMUM DAILY SNOW DEPTHS RECORDED AT THE
END OF FEBRUARY RANGED FROM 12 INCHES AT BANGOR TO 45 INCHES AT
CARIBOU. INDEED, THESE AVERAGES AND MAXIMUM DAILY SNOW DEPTHS WOULD
HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER IF THE DECEMBER SOLSTICE SOAKING
RAINFALL, WHICH MELTED OVER A FOOT OF SNOW PACK ACROSS THE NORTH,
DID NOT OCCUR.
IN SUMMARY, WINTER RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SNOW MOBILING,
CROSS COUNTRY/DOWNHILL SKIING AND SNOW SHOEING ACROSS CENTRAL AND
ESPECIALLY NORTHERN AREAS BENEFITED FROM THE ABOVE AVERAGE SNOW PACK
RESULTING FROM FREQUENT SNOWFALLS AND RELATIVELY CONSISTENT COLD
TEMPERATURES.
