April Fools' Day Storm 2021 Update One

Special weather statement in effect for:

Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County

A prolonged period of rain is expected.

Total rainfall: in excess of 50 mm.

Locations: eastern mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton.

Time span: beginning Thursday afternoon continuing through Friday and into Saturday.

Remarks: Periods of rain, possibly heavy at times, will spread across Nova Scotia on Thursday. This rain is expected to persist over most of Nova Scotia well into Friday and indications show it will likely persist into Saturday over eastern parts of the province. Total amounts in excess of 50 millimetres of rain are possible over these areas, with locally total amounts of 100 mm possible by late Saturday.

Rainfall warning in effect for:

Halifax Metro and Halifax County West

Rain, heavy at times is expected.

Total rainfall: 30 to 60 mm.

Locations: Halifax county and much of southwestern Nova Scotia.

Time span: beginning Thursday morning and continuing into Friday.

Remarks: Periods of rain will develop over southwestern Nova Scotia early on Thursday and are expected to persist into Friday, As the system responsible stalls on Friday, rain could potentially persist even longer over eastern parts of the province, and rainfall warnings will likely be expanded eastward as the situation continues to evolve.

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Fredericton and Southern York County

Rain, heavy at times is expected.

Total rainfall: 30 to 60 mm, with higher amounts possible along the Fundy coast.

Locations: southwestern New Brunswick.

Time span: Thursday morning into Friday.

Remarks: A slow moving low pressure system is expected to bring rain to New Brunswick on Thursday and continuing into Friday. A brief period of freezing rain is possible in some areas before precipitation ends early Friday morning.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Freezing rain warning in effect for:

Mount Carleton - Renous Highway

Freezing rain is expected or occurring.

Locations: northwestern New Brunswick.

Time span: Thursday afternoon until early Friday morning.

Remarks: Periods of rain will develop over the region on Thursday then will gradually change to ice pellets then freezing rain from west to east during the day Thursday as colder air slowly moves in from the northwest, Precipitation is expected to gradually taper off to scattered flurries later Thursday evening or early Friday morning.

Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
