Rainfall warning in effect for:

Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County

Heavy rainfall beginning tonight.

Total rainfall: 50 mm locally.

Locations: the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia and most of Cape Breton.

Time span: overnight tonight and into Thursday morning.

Remarks: Rain at times heavy will spread across the province late this evening. Precipitation will end from west to east Thursday.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.

Maximum wind gusts: 90 km/h.

Locations: Prince Edward Island.

Time Span: beginning overnight tonight and ending Thursday.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Utility outages may occur. Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds.

...FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT EST TONIGHT...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.

* WHERE...A portion of western Maine, including the following

  counties, Franklin and Oxford.

* WHEN...Until midnight EST.

* IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

  - At 859 PM EST, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges

    indicated heavy rain. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected

    to begin shortly in the advisory area. Between 1.5 and 2

    inches of rain have fallen.

  - Additional rainfall amounts up to 0.5 inches are expected

    over the area. This additional rain will result in minor

    flooding.

  - Some locations that will experience flooding include...

    Farmington, Bethel, Rumford, Rangeley, Jay, Dixfield,

    Andover, Weld, Mexico, and Phillips.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood

deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the

dangers of flooding.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are

potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded

roads. Find an alternate route.
