Weather summary
for Quebec
issued by Environment Canada
at 2:40 p.m. EDT Thursday 6 April 2023.
Discussion.
Yesterday, an important Colorado low has been affecting all of
Southern Quebec. Significant freezing rain amounts have fallen.
Looking out their windows on the morning of April 6, 2023, residents
of southern Quebec and eastern Ontario were reminded of the Great
Ice Storm of 1998. The trees twisted under the weight of the ice,
the numerous branches covered with ice littering the ground and the
cool air in the homes without electricity evoked bad memories. The
landscapes are similar, but the situation is different.
Twenty-five years ago, between January 4 and 10, 1998, a succession
of 3 freezing rain systems left between 50 and 100 mm of ice
accretion on areas of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec. It took 6
days for the temperature to rise above 0 Celsius. Northeasterly
winds also developed affecting icy structures.
The freezing rain event on April 5, 2023 left between 10 and 35
millimeters of freezing rain over much the same areas as in 1998.
This time, there will only be one day of freezing rain. Mid-spring,
mid-winter, the freezing rain accumulated very quickly on surfaces,
in an axis stretching from the Outaouais region to the Saguenay
region, causing numerous accidents, broken branches and trees and
power outages. At the peak of the event, Hydro-Quebec reported more
than one million customers without power. Today, the rising
temperature allowed the ice that was still weighing on vegetation
and structures to melt. This rapid melting caused falling ice
situation.
The following is a summary of weather event information received by
Environment Canada following this event.
Summary by area of freezing rainfall amounts (mm):
Montreal: 30 to 35
Montérégie: 15 to 25
Lachute: 10
Outaouais: 25 to 30
Richelieu: 15
Mauricie: 5 to 10
Centre-du-Québec: 10 to 15
Quebec City: 2 to 4
