...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM WEDNESDAY TO

9 AM EDT THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations

  between 1 and 4 inches, sleet accumulations one half inch to 1

  inch, and ice accumulations between two tenths and four tenths of

  an inch.

* WHERE...Portions of Central Highlands, Far Eastern, and North

  Woods Maine

* WHEN...From 2 PM Wednesday to 9 AM EDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous

  conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning

  commutes. A few tree branches could fall from the ice, and

  isolated power outages are possible.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or

freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery roads

and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

Ice build-up due to freezing rain is expected or occurring.

Locations: southwestern New Brunswick.

Time span: Wednesday night ending Thursday morning.

Remarks: Precipitation will begin as snow or ice pellets Wednesday evening, and then transition to a prolonged period of freezing rain Wednesday night. Freezing rain is expected to end Thursday morning as precipitation tapers and temperatures rise above zero.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.

A significant period of freezing precipitation is expected.

Locations: southwestern to northern mainland Nova Scotia.

Time span: Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.

Remarks: A potentially significant period of ice pellets and freezing rain is expected to affect the region beginning Wednesday evening and ending Thursday morning. 

Current guidance indicates that southwestern Nova Scotia will start as rain Wednesday evening then become mixed with or change to freezing rain. Central areas of the mainland will see ice pellets and rain transitioning to freezing rain overnight Wednesday. Northern regions will start off as snow, possibly mixed with ice pellets, changing to ice pellets or freezing rain Thursday morning. As this system develops, additional information and possible warnings will be provided regarding the areas to be most affected. 

Similar storms in the past have led to utility outages and hazardous driving conditions.
