Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County
3:45 PM AST Friday 21 December 2012
Rainfall warning for
Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County continued

This is a warning that significant rainfall is expected tonight in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

A low pressure system over New England will slowly approach the Maritimes tonight and Saturday. Rain ahead of the system has already begun over extreme Southwest Nova Scotia. The rain will intensify this evening as it spreads northeast and as a result rainfall warnings are now in effect for most of Nova Scotia. Total rainfall amounts of anywhere from 20 to 40 millimetres can be expected over Nova Scotia from this system. On Saturday the rain will taper off to showers over much of the mainland but will persist into Saturday evening for Cape Breton.

It should also be noted that a brief period of snow is still possible for the Cobequid Pass area of Cumberland County late this evening before a changeover to rain near midnight.

The low pressure system will also bring strengthening southeast winds over the Maritimes tonight. Over Cape Breton southeast winds..Les Suetes..are expected to gust to near 100 km/h before dawn Saturday and to near 120 km/h Saturday morning.
