08-03-2013 storms cause Maine outages; forecast calls for more thunderstorms

BANGOR, Maine — Thunderstorms caused outages in several counties late Saturday afternoon.

Nearly 150 outages were reported in Penobscot, Hancock, Lincoln, Somerset and Waldo counties.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service offices in Caribou and Gray are predicting rain and thunderstorms through Sunday night. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds and heavy rain, the weather service said.

According to the weather service, the chance of precipitation was 40 percent for Sunday.

A brief but intense thunder and lightning storm swept through Greater Bangor shortly after 4 p.m., sending Bangor State Fair attendees and others scurrying for cover.

As of 7:35 p.m., 39 outages were reported by Bangor Hydro Electric Co. and Central Maine Power Co. was handling 36 outages.
