At 1000 AM EDT...A very strong and occluded low pressure center
with a minimum central pressure of 943 mb, or approximately 27.85
inches of mercury, was analyzed northeast of New Foundland
entering the Labrador Sea. A strong cold front extends south of
the low and well offshore of the U.S. East Coast over the western
Atlantic Ocean. Behind the rapidly exiting low center, RADAR and
surface observations indicate that the lingering light snow over
northern New England early this morning has now tapered off.

The very deep low center entering the Labrador Sea will continue
to rapidly pull away to the northeast today and away from Atlantic
Canada. Gusty winds will continue over areas of northern New
England for a few more hours which will result in some additional
blowing and drifting of snow, and locally reduced visibility.

Discussion.
A low pressure system emerged from the eastern United States on
Saturday, March 12, and rapidly intensified into a large and
powerful storm as it tracked northeastward to cross southern
Labrador on Sunday, March 13. The storm brought a brief period of
snow and freezing precipitation to Newfoundland, followed by heavy
rain and very mild temperatures, along with extremely high winds. As
it moved away, it gave a second period of high winds, as well as
flurries and snow squalls across western and southern parts of the
island.

Discussion.
A low pressure system emerged from the eastern United States on
Saturday, March 12, and rapidly intensified into a large and intense
storm as it crossed southern Labrador on Sunday, March 13. Heavy
snow and strong winds associated with the system caused blizzard
conditions across much of Labrador with widespread blowing snow.
Over southeastern parts of Labrador, a transition through freezing
rain to rain occurred early Sunday morning before precipitation
changed back to flurries.
Of note: the Cartwright weather station measured a barometric
pressure value of 945.1 milibars at 11:59 A.M. ADT on Sunday. This
broke the old all-time lowest barometric pressure of 950.7 mb
previously recorded at the site on December 2, 1972. Barometric
pressure records have been kept at Cartwright since 1955.

Discussion.
A low pressure system gave significant snowfall amounts over several
areas of Quebec beginning Friday afternoon through overnight
Saturday to Sunday. Over the east, freezing rain was reported
overnight in addition to the snow.
Blowing snow affected Central and Eastern Quebec during the day
Saturday and continues to be reported over the Gaspe Peninsula and
the Lower North Shore, giving difficult road conditions this
morning.
