Mid-February Maritimes Winter Storm Event Summary: Atlantic Canada Data

SPECIAL WEATHER SUMMARY MESSAGE FOR NOVA SCOTIA ISSUED BY ENVIRONMENT
CANADA AT 6:01 AM AST MONDAY 18 FEBRUARY 2013.

AN INTENSE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM APPROACHED FROM THE SOUTHWEST
SUNDAY AND TRACKED ACROSS NOVA SCOTIA SUNDAY EVENING. RAIN
AHEAD OF THIS SYSTEM DEVELOPED SATURDAY EVENING AND CONTINUED
DURING THE DAY SUNDAY HOWEVER OVER EASTERN AND NORTHERN REGIONS OF 
THE PROVINCE MIXED PRECIPITATIONS WERE REPORTED. THE RAIN CHANGED TO 
SNOW SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN THE WAKE OF THE SYSTEM. FREEZING RAIN 
PREVAILED OVER NORTHWESTERN REGIONS SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

STRONG EASTERLY WINDS DEVELOPED EARLY SUNDAY MORNING OVER CAPE
BRETON AND PERSISTED FOR MUCH OF THE DAY. WIND DAMAGE WAS REPORTED
IN THE CHETICAMP AREA WHERE GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 160 KM/H WERE 
MEASURED. LATE SUNDAY VERY STRONG WESTERLY WINDS DEVELOPED IN THE 
WAKE OF THE SYSTEM.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS WERE GENERALLY FROM 15 TO 30 MM, WITH HIGHER
AMOUNTS IN CAPE BRETON, WHERE AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF 50 MM WERE 
REPORTED.

AN INTENSE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVED UP THE AMERICAN SEABOARD ON 
SUNDAY AND THEN MOVED TO LIE OVER THE MARITIMES SUNDAY NIGHT. THIS 
LOW BROUGHT SNOW, RAIN AND STRONG WINDS TO MUCH OF THE ISLAND SUNDAY 
AFTERNOON AND SUNDAY NIGHT. THE LOW WILL WEAKEN TODAY AS IT TRACKS 
SLOWLY EASTWARD ACROSS NEWFOUNDLAND.
