...JUNE 2022 NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE CLIMATE NARRATIVE...

JUNE 2022 FINISHED A LITTLE COOLER THAN AVERAGE WITH WETTER

THAN NORMAL CONDITIONS ACROSS THE NORTH AND DRIER ACROSS CENTRAL

AND DOWNEAST AREAS.

TEMPERATURES GENERALLY RANGED FROM 0.5 TO 1.5 DEGREES BELOW

AVERAGE ACROSS THE REGION, WHICH WAS IN SHARP CONTRAST TO THE

PRIOR TWO JUNES WHICH WERE AMONGST THE WARMEST JUNES ON RECORD

FOR THE REGION. FREQUENT COLD FRONTAL PASSAGES AND UPPER LEVEL

LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS KEPT SUNSHINE AT A PREMIUM AND TEMPERATURES

REACHING HIGHS OF 80+ ACROSS NORTHERN LOCATIONS SUCH AS CARIBOU

UNTIL THE 25TH. INTERESTINGLY, THE COOLEST DAY OF THE MONTH WAS ON

THE 19TH WHEN HIGH TEMPERATURES ACROSS SOME LOCATIONS REMAINED

BELOW 50 DEGREES, AS EVIDENT BY HIGH OF 49 DEGREES AT CARIBOU

WHICH WAS 47 DEGREES COOLER THAN THE ALL TIME RECORD TYING HIGH OF

96 DEGREES ON THIS DATE TWO YEARS AGO. THE HIGH OF 49 DEGREES WAS

ALSO THE LATEST DATE IN THE SPRING WHEN THE HIGH TEMPERATURE FAILED

TO REACH 50 DEGREES. OTHER LONG TERM CLIMATE SITES SUCH AS HOULTON,

MILLINOCKET, AND BANGOR ALSO HAD THEIR LOWEST HIGH TEMPERATURE

OBSERVED SO LATE INTO JUNE. WARMEST HIGH TEMPERATURES

THIS MONTH OCCURRED ON THE 25TH AND 26TH WHERE MOST LOCATIONS

REACHED 80S TO LOWER 90S AS EVIDENT BY HIGHS OF 90 AND 92 DEGREES,

RESPECTIVELY, AT BANGOR.

RAINFALL VARIED WIDELY THIS MONTH, TO LESS THAN 50 PERCENT OF

AVERAGE OVER SOME DOWNEAST LOCATIONS LIKE BANGOR, TO LOCALLY

UPWARDS TO 130+ PERCENT OF AVERAGE OVER EXTREME NORTHERN MAINE.

AT BANGOR, THE 1.49 INCH TOTAL FOR THE MONTH WAS THE 6TH DRIEST

ON RECORD WITH THE DRIEST JUNE AT BANGOR 0.87 INCHES SET IN 1930

(METEOROLOGICAL RECORDS AT BANGOR BEGAN IN 1925). WETTEST DAYS,

MAINLY ACROSS THE NORTH, OCCURRED ON 5-6TH, 9-10TH, AND 18-20TH.

TOTAL EVAPORATION AT CARIBOU AS MEASURED FROM THE 4TH ONWARD FOR

THE MONTH WAS 3.55 INCHES, BUT THIS LIKELY WAS AN UNDERESTIMATE

FOR CENTRAL AND DOWNEAST AREAS WHICH HAD MORE SUNSHINE. IN ANY

EVENT, THERE WERE RAINFALL - EVAPORATION SURPLUSES ACROSS THE

NORTH AND DEFICITS ACROSS CENTRAL AND INTERIOR DOWNEAST AREAS.

THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER`S FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF JULY FOR

OUR REGION IS CALLING FOR SLIGHTLY INCREASED ODDS OF ABOVE NORMAL

OVER NEAR OR BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND NEAR EQUAL ODDS OF

ABOVE, NEAR, OR BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL. AVERAGE TEMPERATURES RANGE

FROM LOWS AND HIGHS OF MID 50S AND MID TO UPPER 70S OVER FAR

NORTHERN AREAS TO UPPER 50S AND AROUND 80 DEGREES FOR INTERIOR

DOWNEAST AREAS. AVERAGE JULY RAINFALL RANGES FROM NEAR 3.25 INCHES

OVER DOWNEAST AREAS UPWARDS TO 4.25 INCHES ACROSS THE EXTREME

NORTH.
