...JUNE 2021 CLIMATE NARRATIVE FOR NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE...

JUNE WAS A VERY WARM MONTH ACROSS NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE.
TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM 3 TO 5 DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE. IT RANKED 
AS THE ALL-TIME WARMEST JUNE ON RECORD IN CARIBOU, AND IT WAS ONE
HALF A DEGREE (0.5F) WARMER THAN THE PREVIOUS RECORD THAT WAS SET
JUST LAST YEAR. IN HOULTON, IT RANKED AS THE 2ND WARMEST JUNE 
BEHIND ONLY 1973. IN MILLINOCKET, IT RANKED AS THE 2ND WARMEST 
JUNE BEHIND ONLY 1930; AND FINALLY IN BANGOR IT RANKED AS THE 4TH 
WARMEST BEHIND 1930, 1933, AND 1938. 

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE WEATHER RECORDS BEGAN IN 1939 THERE WAS A
90-DEGREE DAY IN CARIBOU DURING THE FIRST TEN DAYS OF JUNE. IN 
FACT, THERE WERE BACK-TO-BACK HIGHS OF 92 DEGREES ON THE 7TH AND 
8TH. THE LOW OF 69 DEGREES ON THE 27TH TIED WITH 1942, 1949,
AND 2017 FOR THE ALL-TIME WARMEST LOW TEMPERATURE DURING THE 
MONTH OF JUNE. 

PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW AVERAGE AND RANGED FROM 25 TO 75
PERCENT OF NORMAL. THE ONLY EXCEPTIONS WERE ACROSS THE FAR NORTH
FROM CARIBOU NORTH TO THE SAINT JOHN VALLEY WHERE PRECIPITATION
WAS 80 TO 110 PERCENT OF NORMAL, AND IN SOME SMALL PARTS OF
WASHINGTON AND HANCOCK COUNTY THAT LOCALLY HAD ABOVE AVERAGE 
PRECIPITATION DUE TO LOCALIZED THUNDERSTORMS. 

IN BANGOR, IT RANKED AS THE 2ND DRIEST JUNE ON RECORD WITH ONLY
0.97 INCHES OF RAIN. IN MILLINOCKET IT RANKED AS THE 8TH DRIEST
JUNE ON RECORD WITH 1.37 INCHES OF RAIN. 

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EVENTS OF THE MONTH WERE FLASH FLOODING THAT
OCCURRED IN THE MORNING OF JUNE 9TH IN PARTS OF WASHINGTON AND
HANCOCK COUNTIES WITH LOCAL REPORTS OF OVER 5 INCHES OF RAIN. 
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ON THE 21ST. A MICROBURST OVER LIMESTONE 
MAINE PRODUCED WIND GUSTS THAT WERE ESTIMATED AT 100 TO 110 MPH. 
ANOTHER MICROBURST THAT SAME DAY FROM CASTLE HILL TO JUST 
SOUTHWEST OF CARIBOU THAT PRODUCED WIND GUSTS THAT WERE ESTIMATED 
BETWEEN 90-100 MPH. 

DROUGHT CONDITIONS WORSENED ACROSS THE REGION DURING THE MONTH OF
JUNE. BY THE END OF THE MONTH, SEVERE DROUGHT CONDITIONS WERE
OBSERVED ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN PENOBSCOT AND SOUTHWEST
PISCATAQUIS COUNTIES. MODERATE DROUGHT WAS OBSERVED ACROSS MUCH OF
THE REMAINDER OF THE AREA, WITH ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS 
OBSERVED ACROSS THE CROWN OF MAINE SOUTH INTO WASHINGTON COUNTY.

THE OUTLOOK FOR THE MONTH OF JULY FROM THE CLIMATE PREDICTION 
CENTER IS CALLING FOR GREATER PROBABILITIES OF ABOVE AVERAGE 
TEMPERATURES AND BELOW AVERAGE PRECIPITATION ACROSS THE REGION.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES FOR JULY RANGE FROM LOWS IN THE MID TO UPPER
50S AND HIGHS IN THE MID TO UPPER 70S ACROSS THE NORTH TO LOWS
CLOSER TO 60 AND HIGHS IN THE LOW 80S FOR INTERIOR DOWNEAST. 
AVERAGE RAINFALL FOR THE REGION AS A WHOLE IS 3.50 TO 4 INCHES.
