Historic Winter Storm Kenan Event Summary

Storm Summary Number 3 for Significant Northeast and Mid-Atlantic
Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 AM EST Sun Jan 30 2022

...The significant winter storm has ended across the Mid-Atlantic
and New England, as the low pressure system moves northward into
Canada...

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of northern
Maine.

Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories are in effect for portions of
interior New England, New York and Pennsylvania.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 900 AM EST...A powerful low pressure center with a minimum
central pressure of 972 mb, or approximately 28.70 inches of
mercury, was located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, 250 miles to the
north and east of Maine. An occluded front extended to the
northeast towards Newfoundland and Labrador, connecting to warm
front extending north and a cold front extending south across the
open Atlantic. RADAR and surface observations indicated the snow
associated with the powerful system was ending in Maine as it
moved northeastward into Canada. Behind the northward moving
storm, winds of 10-20 mph, with gusts to 30 mph had led to areas
of blowing snow and below-zero wind chill values across much of
the Northeast.

The low pressure center will continue to move northward through
Newfoundland and Labrador during the day, with snowfall ending in
northern Maine early today. Morning temperatures will be bitterly
cold across New England as temperatures dip into the single
digits. These cold temperatures along with ongoing winds will lead
to wind chills of 15-25 degrees below zero Sunday morning across
interior portions of New England and New York. Gusty winds may
also lead to blowing snow across northern and eastern Maine,
leading to reduced visibility and difficult driving conditions.

This will be the last Storm Summary issued by the Weather
Prediction Center for this event. Please refer to your local
National Weather service office for additional information.
