...NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE MONTHLY AREA CLIMATE NARRATIVE...

JANUARY 2015 FEATURED BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND ABOVE NORMAL 
SNOWFALL ACROSS NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE.

TEMPERATURES WERE BELOW NORMAL THIS PAST JANUARY AND AVERAGED FROM 1 
TO 3 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.  THERE WAS A BRIEF JANUARY THAW AROUND 
THE MIDDLE OF MONTH THAT PRODUCED HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 40S ON 
THE 18TH AND 19TH.  

AT CARIBOU...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 8.5 DEGREES WAS 1.7 DEGREES 
BELOW THE 1981-2010 NORMALS.  IT WAS THE COLDEST JANUARY SINCE 2009. 
THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 19 NIGHTS WHEN THE TEMPERATURE FELL BELOW 
ZERO...WHICH WAS 3 NIGHTS MORE THAN AVERAGE.  THERE WERE 2 DAYS WHEN 
THE HIGH TEMPERATURE FAILED TO GET ABOVE ZERO...WHICH IS AVERAGE FOR 
THE MONTH OF JANUARY.

AT BANGOR...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 14.5 DEGREES WAS 2.5 DEGREES 
BELOW NORMAL.  IT WAS ALSO THE COLDEST JANUARY SINCE 2009. THERE 
WERE A TOTAL OF 11 NIGHTS WHEN THE TEMPERATURE FELL BELOW 
ZERO...WHICH IS 2 NIGHTS MORE THAN AVERAGE.

JANUARY 2015 FEATURED NEAR NORMAL LIQUID PRECIPITATION ACROSS MOST 
OF NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE...BUT WELL ABOVE NORMAL 
SNOWFALL...ESPECIALLY SO ACROSS THE DOWN EAST REGION.  AT CARIBOU A 
TOTAL OF 33.7 INCHES OF SNOW WAS OBSERVED...MAKING IT THE SNOWIEST 
JANUARY SINCE 2000. AT BANGOR A TOTAL OF 41.8 INCHES OF SNOW WAS 
OBSERVED...MAKING IT THE SNOWIEST JANUARY SINCE 1987 AND THE 3RD 
SNOWIEST JANUARY ON RECORD. 1966 STILL HOLDS THE TOP HONORS WITH 
48.4 INCHES OF SNOW.

THE BIG STORY THIS PAST JANUARY WAS THE HEAVY SNOWFALL ACROSS THE 
DOWN EAST REGION DURING THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH. 27.9 INCHES OF 
SNOW WAS OBSERVED AT BANGOR DURING THE LAST 5 DAYS OF THE 
MONTH...WHICH WAS A RECORD.  EASTPORT RECEIVED A WHOPPING 50.2 INCHES 
OF SNOW DURING THE LAST 7 DAYS OF THE MONTH...WHICH WAS BY FAR A 
WEEKLY RECORD FOR ANYTIME OF THE YEAR. 
  
THE MONTH BEGAN WITH A SNOWPACK OF 5 TO 10 INCHES ACROSS NORTHERN 
MAINE WITH LOCALLY OVER A FOOT IN THE NORTH WOODS. THERE WAS LITTLE 
OR NO SNOW ON THE GROUND ACROSS DOWN EAST MAINE.  BY THE END OF THE 
MONTH THERE WAS 20 TO 30 INCHES OF SNOW ON THE GROUND ACROSS MOST OF 
THE REGION...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS IN THE NORTH WOODS AND IN 
PORTIONS OF THE DOWN EAST REGION.

THE OUTLOOK FROM THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER FOR THE MONTH OF 
FEBRUARY FOR OUR REGION CALLS FOR AN INCREASED LIKELIHOOD OF BELOW 
NORMAL TEMPERATURES.  THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES BEGIN TO SLOWLY CLIMB 
FROM 20 ON THE 1ST OF THE MONTH TO 28 BY MONTHS END.  THE AVERAGE 
LOW TEMPERATURES RISE FROM 1 ABOVE ON THE 1ST TO 8 ABOVE BY THE END 
OF THE MONTH.  AT BANGOR...THE AVERAGE HIGH RISES FROM 28 ON THE 1ST 
TO 35 BY THE END OF THE MONTH. THE AVERAGE LOW CLIMBS FROM 7 ABOVE 
ON THE 1ST TO 14 BY MONTHS END. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY SNOWFALL AT 
CARIBOU IS 22.2 INCHES...AND IS 14.7 INCHES.  OVER AN HOUR OF 
DAYLIGHT IS GAINED DURING THE COURSE OF THE MONTH.
