Time span: tonight.

Remarks: A line of severe thunderstorms has developed this evening over the Gulf of Maine. This line of storms will approach southwestern New Brunswick near midnight, and move east overnight. Torrential downpours may accompany these thunderstorms.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Heavy rain is expected.

Total rainfall: 50 to 70 mm except up to 100 mm in some areas of northern New Brunswick.

Locations: central, southwestern and northern New Brunswick.

Time span: spreading to the northeast this evening continuing until noon Wednesday.

Remarks: Rain, heavy at times, will continue tonight with embedded torrential downpours with rates as high as 30 mm/h in the heaviest rain possible this evening and in the overnight hours. Similar rainfall rates have been observed today with this system in parts of New England. The rain will taper off to scattered showers near noon Wednesday.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Don't approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

10:10 PM ADT Tuesday 8 August 2023
Rain, at times heavy with scattered thunderstorms, is expected.

Total rainfall amount: 30 to 70 mm. Possibly higher in thunderstorms.

Rainfall rate: 30 to 50 mm/h possible in thunderstorms.

Location: central and western Nova Scotia.

Remarks: A low pressure system over New England will cross the region tonight and Wednesday. Rain, heavy at times, with embedded thunderstorms giving torrential downpours has moved into western Nova Scotia this evening. This area of rain will reach central Nova Scotia near midnight tonight. Total rainfall amounts will be highly variable in the warned counties due to the embedded convection. Rainfall rates of 10 to 20 mm/h are expected in general, with rates of 30 to 50 mm/h possible in the strongest thunderstorms. These torrential rates were observed earlier today in southern New England. Should the system strengthen further as it approaches Nova Scotia, rates above 50 mm/h could be possible.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.
