TEMPERATURES FOR THE MONTH AS A WHOLE AVERAGED BELOW THE 30-YEAR
AVERAGES AND RANGED FROM 0.3 DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE AT BANGOR TO 2.4
DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE AT CARIBOU. THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH
FEATURED ALTERNATING SPELLS OF ABOVE AND BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES.
TEMPERATURES WERE BELOW AVERAGE ON MOST DAYS DURING THE SECOND HALF
OF THE MONTH. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH AND OF THE
METEOROLOGICAL WINTER WAS OBSERVED ON THE MORNING OF THE 28TH WITH
LOWS OF 32 BELOW AT BOTH ESTCOURT STATION AND BIG BLACK RIVER.
AT CARIBOU, 35.4 INCHES OF SNOW WAS OBSERVED, WHICH WAS 13.2 INCHES
ABOVE AVERAGE. IT RANKED AS THE 11TH SNOWIEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD. AT
BANGOR, A TOTAL OF 16.6 INCHES OF SNOW WAS OBSERVED, WHICH WAS 1.9
INCHES ABOVE AVERAGE. ACROSS THE REGION AS A WHOLE, PRECIPITATION
RANGED FROM 70 TO 90 PERCENT OF NORMAL ACROSS THE DOWN EAST REGION,
AND FROM 100 TO 150 PERCENT OF NORMAL ACROSS NORTHERN AREAS.
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORMS OCCURRED ON THE 13TH WHEN OVER A
FOOT OF SNOW WAS OBSERVED FROM MILLINOCKET NORTH TO CARIBOU, WITH 6
TO 10 INCHES OF SNOW DOWN EAST AND ACROSS THE SAINT JOHN VALLEY.
ANOTHER WINTER STORM AFFECTED THE REGION ON THE 24TH INTO THE 25TH
WITH THE HIGHEST TOTALS OF A FOOT OR MORE ACROSS THE SAINT JOHN
VALLEY WITH 10.8" AT CARIBOU AND ONLY 1 TO 3 INCHES ALONG THE COAST.
IT WAS THE WIND BEHIND THE STORM THAT PRODUCED TREMENDOUS BLOWING
AND DRIFTING SNOW FOR NEARLY 2 DAYS ACROSS MUCH OF THE CROWN OF
MAINE WITH DRIFTS 10 FEET OR MORE DEEP IN SPOTS.
MANY ROADS IN AROOSTOOK COUNTY WHERE CLOSED WHILE CREWS WORKED TO
CLEAR THE SNOW.
AT THE START OF THE MONTH, THE SNOW DEPTH RANGED FROM 2 TO 4 FEET
ACROSS NORTHERN AREAS. AMOUNTS RAPIDLY DROPPED OFF TO THE SOUTH OF
MILLINOCKET WITH 4 INCHES AT BANGOR AND GENERALLY 2 TO 6 INCHES FOR
MOST AREAS DOWN EAST AND ALONG THE COAST. BY THE END OF THE MONTH,
THE SNOW DEPTH RANGE FROM 3 TO 5 FEET ACROSS NORTHERN AREAS. AMOUNTS
DROPPED OFF RAPIDLY TO THE SOUTH OF MILLINOCKET WITH 8 INCHES ON THE
GROUND AT BANGOR AND FROM 2 TO 6 INCHES ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COAST.
THROUGH FEBRUARY A TOTAL OF 147 INCHES OF SNOW WAS OBSERVED AT
CARIBOU. THIS WAS THE MOST ON RECORD FOR A WINTER SEASON THROUGH
FEBRUARY BEHIND ONLY THE WINTER OF 2007-2008 WHEN A TOTAL OF 145.5
INCHES OF SNOW AS OBSERVED.
THE MEAN SNOW DEPTH FOR THE MONTH AT CARIBOU WAS 36.3 INCHES, WHICH
IS WELL ABOVE THE 30-YEAR AVERAGE OF 18.8 INCHES. IT RANKED AS THE
5TH HIGHEST MEAN SNOW DEPTH FOR FEBRUARY, BUT WAS WELL BEHIND THE
RECORD YEAR OF 1977 WHEN THE MEAN SNOW DEPTH WAS 55.1 INCHES.
THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER`S OUTLOOK FOR NORTHERN AND EASTERN
MAINE FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH INDICATES AN INCREASED LIKELIHOOD OF
BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES. THERE ARE NO STRONG CLIMATE SIGNALS THAT
WOULD POINT TOWARD AN UNUSUALLY WET (SNOWY) OR DRY MONTH.
