...Strong winter storm to depart into southern Canada, with
scattered light to moderate snow possible on the back side of the
low over the Northeast...

At 900 PM EST...A strong surface low with a central pressure of
980 mb, or 28.93 inches of Mercury, was analyzed over southern
Quebec at approximately 46.3N, 71.1W. An occluded front extended
east from the low pressure center into a triple point located over
Novia Scotia. Doppler radar and surface observations indicated an
area of light to moderate snow over portions of New York and New
England. Farther south, scattered light snowfall was reported over
the Alleghenies.

The occluded system is forecast to follow a northward trajectory
into Quebec this evening. Additional light lake and terrain
enhanced snowfall is possible over portions of the Northeast and
New England as a secondary cold front drops into the area tonight.

Discussion.
A strong low pressure system tracked southeast of Lake Ontario and
brought very heavy snow to much of Southern Ontario Sunday night
into Monday. Snowfall rates in excess of 10 cm in an hour were
reported at times Monday morning in Ottawa and the Greater Toronto
Area. Blowing snow was also reported in some areas.
The snowfall amounts reported at Toronto Pearson International
Airport and Ottawa International Airport fall within the top ten
highest snowfall totals reported in a single snowfall event for each
of these sites.

Discussion.
A major weather system gave winter storm conditions over Southern
Quebec through the North Shore yesterday. In addition to the heavy
snowfall, the strong winds associated with this storm generated
widespread blowing snow and reduced visibilities were reported along
the entire track of the system.
