July 2024 Climate Summary for Northern and Eastern Maine



..JULY 2024 CLIMATE NARRATIVE FOR NORTHERN/EASTERN MAINE...

JULY 2024 WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR SIGNIFICANTLY ABOVE NORMAL 
TEMPERATURES, HUMIDITY, AND FOR PORTIONS OF THE REGION, RAINFALL.

TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE REGION RANGED FROM 2.0 DEGREES (F) ABOVE THE 
30-YEAR 1991-2020 NORMALS OVER DOWNEAST AREAS UPWARDS TO 4 DEGREES 
ABOVE AVERAGE ACROSS THE NORTH. IN CARIBOU, IT WAS THE 3RD WARMEST 
JULY ON RECORD. MEANWHILE, MILLINOCKET HAD ITS 4TH WARMEST JULY ON 
RECORD. HOULTON RECORDED ITS 8TH WARMEST JULY, WHILE BANGOR HAD ITS 
9TH WARMEST JULY.

THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 21 DAYS WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 80 DEGREES 
OR GREATER IN CARIBOU. THIS TIED 2018 FOR THE HIGHEST NUMBER ON 
RECORD FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, AS WELL AS FOR ANY MONTH SINCE RECORDS 
BEGAN IN 1939. IN HOULTON, THERE WERE ALSO 21 DAYS WITH A HIGH 
TEMPERATURE OF AT LEAST 80 DEGREES, WHICH WAS THE 10TH MOST EVER FOR 
THE MONTH OF JULY. MILLINOCKET AND BANGOR EACH HAD 24 DAYS RECH 80 
DEGREES OR GREATER, WHICH WERE THE 6TH AND 12TH MOST RESPECTIVELY.

FOR THE 2-MONTH PERIOD OF JUNE AND JULY 2024, IT WAS THE WARMEST ON 
RECORD IN CARIBOU WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 67.8 DEGREES. THIS 
BEAT THE OLD RECORD FROM 2020 BY 0.6 DEGREES. IN HOULTON AND 
MILLINOCKET, IT RANKED AS THE 3RD WARMEST JUNE-JULY 2-MONTH PERIOD 
ON RECORD. AT BANGOR, IT WAS THE 10TH WARMEST.

RAINFALL FOR JULY WAS NEAR NORMAL FOR THE BANGOR REGION AND THE 
NORTH (AROUND 90 TO 110 PERCENT OF NORMAL). ACROSS DOWNEAST AREAS 
AND THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, RAINFALL WAS MOSTLY 125 TO 150 PERCENT OF 
NORMAL. HOWEVER, A ZONE FROM AROUND DOVER-FOXCROFT TO LINCOLN SAW 
RAINFALL UPWARDS OF 250 PERCENT OF NORMAL FOR JULY. THIS WAS MAINLY 
DUE TO THE REMNANTS OF HURRICANE BERYL, WHICH DROPPED ANYWHERE FROM 
3 TO NEARLY 6 INCHES OF RAIN ON JULY 10TH AND 11TH. IN MILLINOCKET, 
6.01 INCHES OF RAIN FELL DURING THE MONTH, MAKING IT THE 3RD WETTEST 
JULY ON RECORD THERE. AS SUCH, THE SMALL AREA OF ABNOMRALLY DRY (D0) 
CONDITIONS IN EASTERN SOMERSET AND WESTERN PISCATAQUIS COUNTIES AT 
THE BEGINNING OF JULY VANISHED BY THE END OF THE MONTH. AT CARIBOU, 
TOTAL EVAPORATION FOR JULY WAS 5.40 INCHES.

THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER'S (CPC) FORECAST FOR AUGUST 2024 
INDICATES AN ELEVATED CHANCE FOR ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR 
NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE. IN ADDITION, THE CPC IS FORECASTING AN 
INCREASED CHANCE OF ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL FOR AUGUST. AT THE START 
OF AUGUST, AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURES RANGE FROM THE UPPER 70S TO 
NEAR 80 DEGREES. AVERAGE LOWS START OUT IN THE MID TO UPPER 50S. BY 
THE END OF THE MONTH, AVERAGE HIGHS FALL TO THE LOWER TO MID 70S. 
AVERAGE LOWS DROP TO THE UPPER 40S IN THE NORTH WOODS AND LOWER 50S 
ELSEWHERE. NEARLY 1.5 HOURS OF DAYLIGHT ARE LOST DURING THE MONTH OF 
AUGUST.
